I find it interesting the range of opinions as they still exist on the appropriate place to hold Hochdeutsch, as evidenced by the range of comments here. I have always been of the view that possessing command of high German (in the modern era, as well as the past) was an indication of a broader education (but by no means superior intelligence, in and by itself). A little like the clout that was gained by those who possessed a grasp of Latin years ago, in the world of academia anyways. And thus the perception of higher social status, real or otherwise.
It would be ludicrous to equate innate intelligence to it (as things academic are not inherent), but higher education certainly has its place in our world. Moreover perceptions still account for so much, to the point where I thought that it was a given that social standing in Germany was dependent on it at least to some degree. Please don't tell me image isn't everything! (even if it isn't!!).
Most interesting to hear the range of views on this. I myself am too far removed from the area to be able to speak authoritatively on this subject. I think it goes without saying though, that this topic remains to this day one clouded in a bit of controversy.
