Hello,
Does anyone know if there are still people living in Franzhorn (near
Hannover) who are related to the Claus Steinberg family who left and emigrated to
America in 1883? He was married to Maria Oerding (my great grandparents).
They had 6 children, all of whom were born in Franzhorn. They first settled in
Wisconsin, but the winters were too harsh there, so they moved to Brooklyn,
New York. I am hoping that someone there would know where in Wisconsin they
had lived and how they traveled from New York to Wisconsin, and back to New
York.
Thank you in advance to anyone who can help me.
Regards from Susanne Ketner, Pennsylvania, USA.

Dear Susanne,
I do not know anything definite about where Claus Steinberg and his family
lived in Wisconsin, but I do have information on the family of Claus's wife,
Maria nee Oerding. Maria was born on 18 Nov 1838 in the village of
Parnewinckel in the parish of Selsingen. Her parents were Christoph Oerding
and Rebecca nee Viebrock. I have traced this Oerding family back to the
early 1700's in the village of Byhusen in the parish of Selsingen and also
the town of Rotenburg a.d. Wmme.
Maria's father has several cousins named Oerding/Ording who emigrated from
Germany in the 1860's and settled in Wisconsin. These cousins settled in
Manitowoc County, Wisconsin. Maria herself had Oerding cousins who
emigrated from Germany and settled in North Dakota, Montana and eventually
Oregon.
My maternal grandmother was Marie Katherine Oerding. She was born in
Germany and emigrated to the U.S. in 1905, eventually living in Richmond
Hill, Queens, New York. Her ancestors also came from the parish of
Selsingen, but I am not able to connect her family with yours (at one point,
they lived about one mile apart, my ancestors in the village of Malstedt and
your ancestors in the village of Byhusen). I believe that our Oerding lines
would've connected, but the earliest church records for Selsingen date only
from 1715.
I also have Steinberg ancestors on my father's side. In 1690, Johann
Mangels married Salome Stenberg (a early spelling of the name -- I have also
seen Stenbarg) in the parish of Oerel. This family lived in Heinschenwalde,
which is about ten miles northwest of Franzhorn. I do have a little
information about a line of Steinberg/Stenbarg who lived in Ahe and Brillit
near Franzhorn in the late 1600's and early 1700's.
I will be leaving tomorrow for a week-long vacation back to New York and
will return on 9/12.
My best regards,
Fred Buck
