Re: Hannover-L Nachrichtensammlung, Band 19, Eintrag 23

HI Everyone

I would be very grateful for any information that anyone may have on a family named Schalk from the Bremen area and also the family of Johann Friedrich Bartling and Heinrich Bartling, both served in King's German Legion at Battle of Waterloo and are believed to have lived in Stoeckendrebber, Hanover.

My great grandfather Johann Otto Schalk, from I think the Bremen area, married Johanne Bartling and lived in London in mid 1800s whre my grandmother Elise Adelheit Schalk was born. Johann Otto Schalk was a sugar baker and worked in the sugar industry in East London. I believe there is a connection between Johanne and the earlier Bartlings but so far have no information to make this link.

Be good to hear from anyone who could help with either names.

Hi Christine

I found my ancestor from the King's German Legion through the British National Archives, located at www.nationalarchives.gov.uk They have thousands documents you can search through, including many on the King's German Legion. You also might want to look at their Documents Online section for the Waterloo Medal Book. It lists everyone who received the Waterloo Medal and is relatively inexpensive (around 4 pounds as I recall). My ancestor was listed there. The Waterloo Medal Book only lists Battalion and name, but some of the other documents in their catalogue that you can search and order has much more extensive background information.

Good luck!
