Re: Hannover-l digest, Vol 1 #590 - 2 msgs

My great, great grandfather Christian Frederick Crozier was enumerated on the
US census of 1860 in the city of Philadelphia. His place of birth is given as
Hannover, Germany in about 1831. His occupation is given as "Cordwainer." A
Cordwainer is a person who worked with new, soft, Cordovan leather. It is an
ancient occupation. The
German equivalent to a Cordwainer might be a schuster or schuhmacher or other
craftsman who worked with new leather. I am trying to find out if my
grandfather
had trained to become a cordwainer in Hannover. Was there a guild or other
organization he would have belonged to? Was there in school or institute where
he would have trained? If his father was also employed as a cordwainer or
schuster would they have lived in a particular section of Hannover? Is there,
perhaps a directory or
census for the City or Kingdom of Hannover that would have recorded a Crozier
family in a shoemaker's or leather worker's shop between 1831 and 1855? Any
information I receive about Cordwainer's or schusters or about directories or
Censuses in the City or Kingdom of Hannover would be greatly appreciated,
thank you.
