RE: Family name Albers

Hello List (Hello John Janmaat),

Concerning your question to the following book:

"Die Bauernhfe im Amte Vechta (by Prof. Dr. Clemens Pagenstert)."

I can tell you that you can find this book in Oldenburg, in the StaatsarchivDamm 43.

On page 152 there is to read concerning the Albers farm in Ellenstedt:

Cour. 6. Albers, 37 ha; 1545 Albert Brunink, 1568 Alert Albers, 1594 Hinr. Albers; the farm belonged to the church (Alexander foundation) of Wildeshausen. Annual manorial land duties: 40 Groschen cash and 1 chicken. Other duties: To the governmental office in Vechta 9 Groschen servant money, 36 Groschen service money to the bailiff, 1 bushel rye to the court; Prven (payment in kind) to the priest and rector and oats as Abelmeyer. Monatsch. 1680 1 Taler 21 Schill." 1669 the farm was burned up, the owner only cultivated land for 1 malter seed. In 1770, on the 10th of November the Alexander foundation of Wildeshausen entered a suit for removal and for dismissal of the non-privileged creditors, the calling up was proclaimed to the creditors from the pulpit on the 15th of November. On the 21st of Juli 1775 the mandatum ad aestimandum of the farm was admitted an on the 8th of November 1776 the sale, reserving the amounts and duties payable of the estate to the Alexander foundation as the lord of the manor. The privileged creditors who did not received their money because of no assets were referred with their claims to the privileged foundation. In 1825bFriedrich Feldhaus is the owner of the estate. He paid off the manorial duty with an annual rent of 1 Taler 11 Groschen. Livestock in 1545: 4 horses, 2 oxen, 5 cows, 5 cattle, 11 pigs, 20 sheep; in 1669: 1 horse, 1 cow, 1 cattle, 5 pigs.

I hope my translation is correct and can help you a little bit.

Greetings

Thank you Gerd Hoffman in Oldenburg,

I was absolutely thrilled to receive your e-mail with the information
about the Albers farm in Ellenstedt.

I appreciate very much what you have done for me, and the trouble that you
have gone to.

Your translation into English is very good, have no fear on that score.
Although I am learning fast, I have to admit that my German is not nearly
as good.

Next October I hope to be spending a day looking around in Goldenstedt and
Ellenstedt, just to get a feel for the place.

  Thank you again,

Dear John,

As I wrote to you earlier my mother's husband was an Albers, from Alsace, although her family, the Rein family, was from Lorraine.
My father's people were from the Oldenburg area. I thought you might be interested in some more sites from the area, so I attaching a web cam site from Lningen, my family's home town. There are two cameras, one trained on the town square, and the other on the church yard, the church of St. Vitua.

Good luck on your upcoming visit, it will be wonderful,

M. Joseph Tiemann

Hello Joseph Tiemann,

I was interested in your note, as my ancestors came from Löningen also. Do you have any historical photos of the area? I would like to incorporate them into my book that I am writing…or any websites with historical photos from the early 1800's???

I have had a hard time tracking my ancestor: John Gerhard Luken, Born 08 May 1817 in Grand Duchy Oldenburg, Germany-parish Löningen (or Loeningen); and died Nov 1898 in Chicago. He emigrated before 1840...as his first child was born then in Cincinnati, Ohio. This is all I know of him.

Sincerely,
Kathie McCallister, Chicago suburbs

Hello Kathie,
I looked for you in the churchbooks and found out that
your Johan Gerd Luken is not born on 8-5-1817 or 5-8-1817 in Löningen.
Where did you get the information about is birth?
Did you count back, what was the day he died?
Mail me back on my privat email address mabey I can help you out.
There are also two beautifull picturebooks about Löningen
from Töne Kramer, when you visit the Löninger wegsite you can see them by the Smucker Verlag. (www.loeningen.de)
The ship them to the USA to.

Hello, Kathie McCallister,

It has been my pleasure to visit the homeland of my great grandfather, Ludvig Anton Tiemann. He came from Lningen to New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1858, at age 14. There are several very knowledgeable people on this list who are able to assist in finding out the history of our families. Sometimes the information is easily available, and it is just offered. Sometimes, a great deal of digging is necessary and their time is valuable and there is a charge.
There was a book published the year 2000, entitled "Lninger Chronik in Bildern (Lningen Chronicle in Pictures). This book features many photos taken by Herr Tne Cramer (who has since died) Herr Kramer lived in Lningen and was an excellent photographer. The ISBN number is: 3-9806575-5-8. Perhaps it is available from Amazon, Germany (Amazon.de: Günstige Preise für Elektronik & Foto, Filme, Musik, Bücher, Games, Spielzeug & mehr).

I have ordered books from Amazon, Germany that are only available there, in Germany, and they quite quickly send them to me here in New Orleans. I am sure there must be some sort of copyright laws that govern the use of Herr Kramer's photos, but perhaps someone on this list could put you in touch with the local publisher there in Lningen.

I attach a few sites that I have enjoyed perusing. Sometimes a translation is given, sometimes not.

I wish you luck and I am glad to me someone from the area.

Sincerely,
M. Joseph Tiemann

  Hello M. Joseph,

Thank you for your e-mails. You have certainly wetted my appetite even
more.

What started as a one-day stopover in Vechta (next October) on my way from
Poland to the Netherlands, is rapidly turning into a much longer stay. I
have already extended my stay to include a day in Goldenstedt-Ellenstedt, a
further day to look at both Lohne and Damme, and now possibly Loeningen.

I understand that all these places are in close proximity of each other and
that the name Albers is fairly common in that entire area. I am absolutely
fascinated with the history and culture of that region and I am determined
to get to the bottom of my ancestry there. As this will probably be my last
trip to Europe I do not mind sacrificing a few days from my stay in the rest
of Europe. If only I could find the time for one more day so that I could go
and visit Oldenburg!

Hello, John,

I am so glad you will be able to extend your visit to the area. As you can see from your reception on this list/group the people are kind and helpful, and intelligent. It is no surprise that for whatever reason folks left behind home and family to venture to new lands, those wanderers made a success of themselves in whatever new lands they settled in. Just one more personal note, I was the first Tiemann to return "home" to Lningen in 135 years, but from my reception you would think I and my family had never left!

John, so nice to have met you, and much good luck to you.

M. Joseph Tiemann

Hi John,

here in Neuenkirchen, only 10 kilomters of Damme, today live some "Albers"!

Regards

Jan

Und in welchem Ort nicht?

Fred

Da hast du recht Fred!

Hier gibt es auch heute noch Höfe mit dem Namen Albers!

Gruß

Jan

They have to be assumed, that these last name Albers have developed in the Middle Ages from first name Albertus. Therefore they are not related if the lives on different places in the 18th century.
Werner Honkomp

Thank you Werner, you are quite correct.

The first name mentioned in relation to the Albers farm is a Albert(us)
Brunink in 1545; the next person (in 1568) is Alert Albers. I have assumed
that Albers is derived from Alber(t)s and that Alert Albers may in fact be a
son of Albert Brunink.

I am in the process of contacting "Ellenstedt" to see whether they know the
location of the old Albers Stette and to get into contact with any Albers
still living there or in Goldenstedt.

  Not long now!
