Re: Familie Rachow ausgewandert in die USA via Hamburg

Robert and Fritz,
I stand corrected. It had not occurred to me that you were talking about the port of departure, not the port of arrival, even though it should have been obvious, if I had read the post more carefully. I am on this list to learn, so I don't mind admitting that I made a mistake and that I learned something new.

That being said, I still defend the merit of posting a query, particularly, if archives are available. I have had some surprising results, although I do not consider such queries a substitute for research.

By the way, while I'm admitting my failings, I see that I mistyped the Johann SCHATZ's arrival date as 1852. It was actually 03 Jul 1854 on the Sir Robert Peel from (yes!) Hamburg. He was accompanied by his future bride, Friederika SCHWARZ or SCHWERN or SCHWERIN (no two sources have the same name), their 9 month old son, Carl SCHATZ, and Wilhelmina SCHATZ, age 24 years and 3 months, but relationship unknown. Johann SCHATZ was born in February 1818 and Friederika in 1831.

And, there, I've sneaked in my shameless query...

I have considered that he could be this Johann SCHATZ on the IGI with no source documentation:

Johann Friedrich Heinrich Schatz Birth: 17 JAN 1818 Satow, , Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Germany
Parents:
  Father: Friedrich David Schatz
  Mother: Friederica Catharina Diederica Ruwolt

Perhaps, if I can access the Hamburg Departure lists, I will be able to make the connection. Unfortunately, a trip the the FHC is not in the cards for me. I will have to look at he other alternatives more closely.

Again, thanks for correcting me with all the additional explanation of the resources.
Humbly,
Cheryl Hartley

I am thrilled about the the fact that your ancestor came to America via
Hamburg and now you know that you can check for the ship list and you should
be able to make the jump across the Atlantic and join the growing crowd!!! I
also apologize for being too much myself (friends and family know of my
faults) and way to blunt and possibly a tad bit overboard... Okay, a LOT
overboard, with my admonition.

I agree with you that queries are wonderful tools and we all have our
unbelievable connections with relatives from old queries. There is a trail
of them with my email address going back to VGPE22A@prodigy.com and then my
currrent email address as Windows was developed. Hard to believe that this
many years have passed with online queries! By all means continue to leave
them as they do work. I just am glad that you and I hope and pray Alberta
will realize just exactly what powder keg of a lead you both have, and
definitely want to hear from you off board once you make that hurdle, If you
cannot read the town name, you can scan and send it to me and I will take a
stab at it.

I am familiar with the ship Sir Robert Peel, and think that there may be a
picture of it online or in Ships of our Ancestors by the way.

Good way to start off the New Year!!!

Robert
