Just an observation on the timing - 1848 was a year of great political
upheaval in Germany (and elsewhere in Europe), and after the democracy
movement was put down (with violence in some areas), a lot of the activists
on the losing side had to leave the country in a hurry. It was a
contributor to the first big wave of German emigration to the US in the
1850s.
Bonnie didn't mention anything about political considerations, but it may be
something to consider/look into.
Have any of these "goodies" survived to the current day? 150+ years is a
long time, but I have a family christening dress that dates back to about
1869, so it shouldn't be out of the question.
