Hi Marlene,
I attempted a discription of the Staatsarchives and how to search and order
copies of records.
Posted on my Genealogy.com website here:

The Staatsarchives, all in the German language, is a database of the
location of records filed,
when persons requested emigration during the years between 1825 to 1870.

Hope this helps, maybe someone else can explain it better.

Thank you very much for your reply Bill. The people I am looking for left
much later than 1870 which may explain why I cannot find them. Do you know
if there are there any records from 1900 onwards?

    For immigrations to the USA in the years 1892 - 1924, you might try to
run a search here:
