Dear List Members,

Would someone kindly tell me about the emigration application records in
this archives mentioned in the email below? That is, are they indications
of people who left Lower Saxony to go to other countries or other areas in
Europe?

Kind regards

Marlene

Hi Marlene:

Not sure which years you are speaking of but my g-uncle left Hannover thru
Bremen in 1852. He was 19 yrs old and received permission from the courts to
leave. Essentially, it was stated that he would not have access to the
family farm/business [impartible inheritance rules] and that the court had
received letters from an Aunt(s) in Cincinnati stating they would look out
for his welfare [He went directly to St. Louis!]

There's always been the question of whether Hannover/Prussia allowed their
young men to leave because of a military need. My g-grand left in 1854 but
left through Le Havre. The Crimean War was on the horizon [although Germanic
states didn't become involved] and therefore it may have been more difficult
for my single, young g-grand to "get out of town."
Good hunting
