I haven't seen an order of whom to choose for godparents, but in southern Hessen, at least, it seems that a great many Taufpaten are the unmarried sibilings of the child's parents. Less frequently are married siblings or their spouses, but I have also seen cases of just plain good friends being the Paten.
Knowing German order, it seems like there would have been some gereral rules
to watch out for. I've been fortunate to have received a large file on my
ancestors and Godparents are mentioned on almost every one of them. Hesse is
not that far from mine (near Osnabrck), so I'll be able to test this out
knowing that there are ALWAYS exceptions - but it's a good place for me to
start looking for patterns!
My grandfather was born in 1875. When trying to get further concret
information about and inquiering first at the church and later at the civil
registration office i got the following:
Civil registration: Nr 7. Oldendorf date 03.27.1875
ERNST FRIEDRICH CARL KUNKEL
*03.21.1875 09.00 pm
Father: Friedrich Wilhelm Heinrich Georg KUNKEL
Mother: Engel Catharina Johanna Kunkel, maiden name Kuhse
both ev-.luth.
The Birth- and Baptisme certificate at Oldendorf, 1853 - 1894,
page 114 year 1875. nr. 9 reads:
KARL AUGUST LOUIS KUNKEL
* 03.21.1875 at 9.00 pm at the glashouse of Oldendorf
son of Friedrich Wilhelm Heinrich Georg KUNKEL and
Engel Catharina Johanna KUNKEL born KUHSE, his wife.
Godparents were August NOLLE. Karl SEIDENSTICKER and
Louis HOMANN als at the glashouse of Oldendorf.
Even a short look to the datas show the total missing of order, logic and
understanding. But the truth. And it is not the only difference i found as
far as names in german registers are concerned.
Wich one can be established and be trusted?
