RE: ANDREE in Celle

Hans Peter Albers
Thank you so much for the info. I have searched and found the other
Celle, zelle and zella in Germany and Poland even. It can be quite
confusing but in view of the fact that he is written in the DBU
(dutch burger union) journals as Fredrik Andree from Zelle
Prussia............was Prussia part of Germany or was it Poland ???
This is has not been easy for me to establish. Perhaps you or some of
our fellow members who are versed in the German History of town and
city names of old may be able to tell us?

   Many thanks

   MaryJane .

MaryJane,
It all depends on what years you are talking about. Yes, Prussia
included Poland at one time. That is what is confusing. The LDS website
only shows Prussia as one of the choices for the state, not Hannover.
Niedersachsen is not a choice. This is a map of Prussia through the years.
You can see where the area of Hannover was Prussia at one time. I'm sure
there are better maps.

Mary Jane,

Prussia became from a small country especially by the different Kings Friedrich a
large country of about almost the extensions of 1871 Germany. As someone already
said the kingdom of Hannover - nowadays mostly identical with Lower-Saxony - was
integrated into Prussia. As the result of the two World Wars, here especially the
second - actually we have a discussion in the press to put together the time from
1914 until 1945 as the second thirty-years-war -, as a result in any way parts
of former Prussia became part of Poland and even Russia. So it is always a ques-
tion of specific historical time, if a given place was considered to be part of
Hannover or Prussia, Prussia or Russia, Prussia, Germany or Poland to tell three
possible examples.

In your case, I would try to get further with your researches at the place of
Celle in Niederscachen. As there is a studied medecine of that name - those do im
most cases read and write English and sudied people in an average situation also
do know more about their family history - it could be worth writing him a letter
after having checked the actual adress by www.telefonbuch.de and try afterwards
the parish registers.

Best wishes Hans Peter Albers, Bienenbttel

P.S.: ZELLE is also a familyname. One Katharine of my family married about 1880 a
railway locomotve driver of that name in Hamburg.
