Quick Question

Can anyone tell me if the name Johann is equivalent to or interchangeable with Julius? As everyone on this list probably knows I am looking for Julius Wilhelm Burgdorf. This is the name he used on a couple of documents in New Orleans, La. but the name J. W. Burgdorf appears on the Hamburg Emigration list and on the passenger list of the ship Oder. On the Emigration list he states that his place of origin is Baddeckenstedt
Erika Giftge kindly searched the church records in Baddeckenstedt and found a Johann Heinrich Wilhelm in the time frame of my search. Could this be my Julius?

Johann is equivalent to John. But that's not to say that someone didn't choose to use a different name.

Julius is equivalent to Julius. I've seen it in both German and American records.

Hope that helps

Mona

Too bad you weren't missing a middle name, but you already have one! That sometimes helps explain certain name inconsistencies we run across. But with that said, I think that Mona and Kerstin have given you the unavoidable answer. It's just too big of a reach there, without further links.
