Prison record

How would I find out if this story is true? My great great grandfather,
Joseph Herman Caspar VOSS b. 1826 in Bergloh, Hannover was said to be a
merchant. It is also said that he opposed whoever was ruling or taking
over. He was said to be always a Hannovarian. The story passed down is
that he also served time in jail because of his loyalty to Hannover.

He did marry a woman from Lohne, Oldenburg but his children were born in
Bergloh. So I presume he was a merchant there.

His boys were sent to Holland when they were old enough to be conscripted.

He emmigrated in 1883 from Bremen to Southampton to USA

Any help will be appreciated.
