Well, James,
Two things - the Stadtarchiv may be a wrong adress for all information they
may have are lists created for taxes of any kind and the information has
to be carefully researched and extracted - with very little information at
all - but the name and the amount of tax he paid.
Depending on his faith - catholic or protestant - a diocese archive would
be better as the usually keep the church records.
Second - to find data older than late 17th century you have to be lucky.
Extremely much devastation in 17th Century and the fact that most church
records were started in the century - stucking in 17th Century is a common
thing.
You should try to find general information about the town in that time
period to see whether you have a chance to gain anything at all.
This was in general - I may be wrong in that specific case
