I have been a member of this list for about a month and have followed it
with interest. There are many good tips and pointers for researching my
Mecklenburg forefathers. I will be moving to Pennsylvania in March and
therefore wanted to post an inquiry for my surname before I left and am
able to resubscribe to this list.
I am looking for any information on my Press (earlier spelling is Pre�)
background, including origin of the name and any information anyone has
on Press members of their family trees. Here is what I have so far:
my great-grandfather, Gustav Otto Heinrich Press,
came to America about 1892 and settled in Wisconsin
as a Lutheran Pastor. He was born Nov. 22, 1869 in
Kuppentin, Mecklenburg, son of the Lutheran Pastor,
Albert Christoph Friedrich Pre�
Albert Christoph Friedrich Pre� (1835-1911), was
born in Wismar and died in Rostock. He was a
Lutheran pastor. His father was Johann Friedrich
Jacob Pre�.
Johann Friedrich Jacob Pre�, was born on January 9,
1803 in Warksdorf, was a master tailor, and died on
June 30, 1871 in Wismar. Family tradition states
that his father's name was
Carl Heinrich Press, no other information is known
I am looking for information from the Mecklenburg Press history. I have
had difficulty finding a town named Warksdorf, does anyone know where it
may have been? I am surmising that it may have been close to Wismar.
Also, any information on the occupation of a tailor in early 19th
century Wismar?
It is interesting that my grandfather, and father were also Lutheran
pastors. Is there a central depository of records kept by the Lutheran
church in Mecklenburg where I could find, for instance, an obituary
notice for Pastor Albert Pre�?
