Hello:
I am looking for suggestions as to why people from the Hannover area
would use the french port of departure Marseilles. Why Marseilles instead of
Hamburg or Bremen? The village of residence was Rehburg and they departed
from Marseliles. It seems that Marseilles was not a major port.

My great-grandmother also went through Marseilles on a trip back to
Switzerland to visit her mother around 1912, according to Ellis Island Web
Site. Perhaps there was good-easy-cheaper transportation to/from Marseilles
than the northern ports.

What time was written then ? There had been times inside the Napoleon reign in
Europe, when the harbours were closed, to damage the English merchandisers and by
that the British islamd. At other times lateron or example in Hamburg there was
the desease cholera in town. As such news was spread very quickly, it could have
