Actually I forgot. I think there is no written V in the polish language but in the spoken language the sound of V occurs...(don't quote me on this). Makes me think the name POVOLISH must be Russian-Poland or possibly Austria-Poland, Prussian area name, though the catholic church records and the polish/latin script I have viewed here in the U.S. can surely use a course of penmanship and spelling :).

Often when I look at a sacramental handwritten record is very difficult not to find various spellings in a family and quite often very difficult to be able to determine for certain anything but dates. Often times what helps me in that area are supporting records like cenus' and knowing that there were families of that surname documented from that town and church at that time. Might come across records of similar looking names from the same individual church or sometimes a witness' of a questionable name clearly documented. And I am babeling.
