Opa or ota?

Hello from Michigan in America. I have a question:

A friend's small child calls her grandfather a slang or nickname
pronounced something like "Ota".

My grandchildren call me "Opa" as that is the only nickname for
grandfather (Großvater) that I know. A lady friend from Nuremberg has
never heard of "ota."

The friend that insists it is "ota" and his father who was born in
Austria to German Republic parents say the word is used in northern
Germany and Austria. I cannot see the connection between the northern
part of Germany and Austria.

Has anyone ever heard of the German word "ota" for grandpa?

Thanks for reading this.
