[OL]was ist com

Hello Fred,

I don't have my materials in front of me to verify this, but as I remember it, they used to put a reference in if the person had communion that year or were a communicant (not sure of the German way to say that without checking). It was my understanding that in the older status animarum (from the mid-late 1600's) that this was how they determined Catholics v. non-Catholics still in the area. I also seem to only remember seeing a c. instead of com.

I don't remember if I've seen it in the 1749/50 status animarum, but this would still seem to be a reason to do it. Were any of the children below first communion age listed with the com.?

one of my long time searches for the 'place' where my wife's
ancestors were Heuerleute has been answered. Werner knows about this
as we tried to get Tegenkamp to look into the old Cappeln Status
Animarum entries. I could not find anything in the films as the
writing was a pure mess of ink blots and burn marks.

The recent post on this list which told of the arrival of the
Seelenregister in Vechta caused me to write to the archive. I know
those people are among the best and most helpful archivists I've run
across in all of Germany. I was glad they got their own copy from
Münster where no one will lift a finger for you.

Anyway, a response showed up immediately as shown here:

Sehr geehrter Herr Rump,

in unserer Kopie des Seelenregisters des Niederstifts Münster von

Es heißt dort (Bistumsarchiv Münster, GV, Hs. 151, Bl. 240):

Hendrich (18, com.), Sohn Weßel (12, com.), Sohn Herman Rudolff (8),
Tochter Catthriena Maria (5), Sohn Jurgen Henrich (4), Bruder Rudolff
Jurgen (38, com.).

Tepen Scheur: Wirtt Johan Herman Baur (48, com.), Tochter Triena
Maria (7), Sohn Dieterich ( 5), Tochter Petronella (3), Mutter
Petronella (69, com.).

(17, com.).

Das Cappelner Register ist von 1750.

Mit freundlichen Grüßen

Can one ask for more? No charge but I'm going to send them some money
anyway. I was and still am elated.

It seems that children under 8 did not yet have their first
communion. What I found out after some suspicion that this was so is
that my Vogels lived in the Backhaus on the Tepen farm as Heuerleute,
at least in 1750. Apparently there was another Heuerman named Baur
living in the Tepen Scheune? Is Scheur a Scheune or barn? And what is
the significance of Wirtt? Is that an old form of farmer what later
became Zeller?
