Thank you to Ben, Paul, Floyd and Betty
for the the information you sent me. I will check this and let you
know my result. Werner
Werner is such a great guy. This whole thing was really my problem
and he jumped in with both feet to try to help me on the European
side of the pond.
Theodore Taphorn fought on the Union side in the American civil war
and was injured in a horse accident in Virginia where he spent time
in a makeshift hospital. He was a tall man and was able to write his
signature way over top of all the others on a bare wall which was
later covered over by wall paper and then discoved in recent times.
Our objective is to find out what happened to this fellow and to
learn if he left any descendants or if there are relatives of his
today in Europe. We know he went back to Germany and that his
injuries were a problem for him in the US where he worked in a stone
quarry. It was also a source of a US pension which was cancelled upon
his return to Germany.
We know found out through Werner's questions and letters in Germany
that he was probably shut out of an inheritance which a younger half-
brother received. His mother had died and there was now a remarried
father in the household. We can well imagine how these things go. So
he left for the Netherlands to see if he could make it there as a
Handelsmann or tradesman.
We know it's like looking for a needle in a haystack but so far we've
found a whole bunch of needles which started with a signature high up
near the ceiling in Blenheim, VA. The connection is Rotterdam and one
would wonder how to find someone there.
Did the Dutch have city directories like other cities? Could he be
listed there? Did they have a census or registration setup? We just
don't know and were hoping some of our Dutch friends in the
genealogical world can help us find the man.
All of us know that people leave traces. The trick is to find them.
