Archives.

It says:

From the marriage certificate
On 16-04-1856 Bernard Anton Perk old 41 from Hasel?nne Germany married
Hendrika Amerongen old 22 born in Ellecom (Rheden).
Bernard's parent were:
Johann Heinrich Perk and Theodora Taphorn

Hendrika's parent were:
Derk Amerongen ans Johanna Wilhelmina Teunissen

The bride's father was also named Dimmendaal.

Bernard was born in 1815-1816. His mother should be between 16 and 30 in
that time. Theodora was probably born between 1785 and 1800. Too old to have
a direct family connection with Theodor Taphorn born in 1838.

It's not said that Theodora Taphorn was in Holland at the time of the
marriage. Johann (double nn) Heinrich Perk sounds very german.
One should check the original certificate and the archive of death
certificates on the name Taphorn.

The death certificates are not web-enabled yet. I'll checked that.

I will phone the Taphorn found in the telephone directory coming week.
As far as I could check no one is researching Taphorn.

Dear Paul,

thank you for the work you're doing. From all of the Taph[o]orn
families found in the Netherlands it would seem to me that these
could be native to their respective areas. We must never forget the
similarities of low German and Dutch from both a geographic and
linguistic standpoint. Similar names are native in lower Saxony and
the present Netherlands simply because of the language roots.

That being said, Werner and I are not trying to do a family or name
study of the entire Taphorn clan. :slight_smile:

Our objective is really to find out what may have happened to Theodor
Taphorn after he left the Cloppenburg area in the late 1880s to go to
Rotterdam. So the search should be about that city and I am very dumb
when it comes to Dutch history and genealogical sources. I simply
have no experience and can only relate to what I would do in Germany
or the US. From all we know Theodor may have gotten on the next boat
to China or settled in Rotterdam to open some kind of business. The
latter being the more likely.

So my questions and requests for help have been about local records
in Rotterdam. What exists? Are there any city directories which list
all residents and/or businesses? We have those both in German and
American cities. Just how big was Rotterdam in the 1880s?

Did people have to register when arriving there? Or could anyone just
hang up a sign on the door and be in business? Or move into any house
or apartment without telling a soul? The latter is not the case in
Germany but is appropriate in America. What about Holland?

Are there any census records?

Just what would a Dutch genealogist do if he were looking for an
ancestor or relation who went to Rotterdam during this time period in
order to find him?
     
I've not really received any answers from our Dutch friends on this
list to these questions. I've gotten lists of various Taphorns all
over the Netherlands.

Our man may never have married and probably left no offspring. He was
in his 50s when he left for Rotterdam. He did not marry during his
stay in America either. There are descendants of his parents in
Germany. We're pretty sure about that and can probably trace them
down. As we all know genealogy is not everyone's cup of tee and some
of these paople are very slow when it comes to answering who they
are. :slight_smile:
