[OL]Searching Senator Bill Mescher's ancestors

Hello List

In my Mescher genealogy research I have made contact with US Senator
Bill Mescher.

Although this American branch spells their name as MESCHER, their
emigrant ancester used the spelling MASCHGER on naturalization papers.
His name was Johann Frederick Maschger arriving in the Baltimore June
24, 1833. His son John Charles Maschger changed the name to MESCHER in
his middle age. Johann's brother, Heinrich Christopher Maschger arrived
in Baltimore June 17, 1835. His line continues to use the MASCHGER
spelling.

The brothers Henry Christopher, birth date August 02, 1802 and Johann
Frederick, birth date September 12, 1806, used the Maschger spelling on
their naturalization papers and on land purchase deeds in Cincinnati
Ohio.

The senator and his family are interested to find out more about the
family history and asked if I could be of assistance.

To me it is quite obvious that the surname was misspelled in the
immigration papers.

A Maschger surname does not appear in the german telephone directory.
Mäscher and Mescher do.

It would be most interesting to find out from the german emigrants
records or ship records the correct spelling of the surnames. I checked
the auswanderer lists on Werner Honkomps site but did not find anything
that fits.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

Han Mescher
