couple of times to absorb it all. Basically, from what I can take from
all of it is they are from a very old place, and that it does not
necessarily mean they are related?
Any questions, just ask. Never jump too far in your conclusions without proof and
being clear about it. You're dealing with a very old family and surely there is much
to be confused about over the centuries.
What I meant about the Heckmann name is that it occurs in various places because
the origin of the name can come from anywhere. That does not mean that all the
Heckmanns of Vechta area are not related. The proof is in the pudding.
Another difficulty is the fact that people went by the place where they lived. So if
some Heckmann line died out or a Heckmann widow remarried without children, her
new husband would assume the name Heckmann without ever being related to the
original owner of the farm. Yet the name goes on for their children as if ...
The family seems to have limited their existence to farming. The 4 volume history
of the City of Vechta does not even mention a Heckmann and the only reference to
Hagstette is that a smith from there in the middle of the 19th century was involved
in the construction of St Mary Hospital. Mayor Bernhard Hoying took charge of the
hospital gardens.
