In Emstek there is a painting of a crucifiction scene with a
representation of a woman and a female child in the lower lefthand
corner. Words in Latin at the base of the painting state that Frese
von Haddien is buried nearby and died young (halfway through life).
The date 1637 is also painted there. My question is this: Is 1637
supposed to be the date of her death or the date the painting was
placed in the church? Sheridan C. Randolph

Don't know if this has been responded to yet.

The time from 1632 to 1650 was pretty much mayhem in the area because of the
occupation of the Swedes during the 30 Years War. Not much was maintained in
the Emsteck church during this time but a few items did get added then or later.
Three pictures were given to the church during the time period of 1628 to 1831. One
of these has a later date inscribed which is the epithaph you are describing above.
No telling why the date says 1637 unless it was in preparation for Fresa von
Haddien's death.

The Latin inscription translated into German says:

Hier an diesem engen Ort ruht Fresa von Haddien, gestorben, als sie kaum die
Mitte ihres Lebensweges erreicht hatte; Ihr Ehegemahl aus Lethe hat diese Tafel ihr
zu hchsten Ehren errichten lassen. Gib Christus, da ich ihr gleich, dereinst ins
Heil gelange.

The epitaph contains the above inscription as well as the picture of Fresa who was
the wife of Jasper von Dorgelo auf Gut Lethe.
