I appreciated Bob Owens letter regarding the Plattdeutsch language. I read somewhere that this language was the predominate language for the communication in the once existing Hanseatic League (1300's) consisting of about 200 European cities along coastal areas in its northern part. Can someone give more information about the early roots of that language. George Poch
Earlier, I mentioned a young woman who had come to Wisconsin to study the Platt
still being spoken here. I didn't have her name because I couldn't find the
newsletter. I've now found the newsletter. It's "Dat Pommersche Blatt"
published by the Pommerscher Verein of Central Wisconsin. The newsletter
reports that Alexandra Jacob, a linguist working on a post-graduate program
from the University of Bielefeld in Germany, studied Low German as spoken in
Marathon and Lincoln Counties for several months in 2002.
