[OL]Passenger Lists in Germany

I found a family of Harms on a passenger manifest
from 1883 whom I believe are my ancestors. The
names on the manifest are an imperfect match with
the actual names of the family. Three names of
six match perfectly, and the others are iffy. Is
there somewhere to confirm on the German end if
this is my family or not?

Only in the churchbooks of the place they came from.

If they were born after 1870 or so, you can also find them in a civil
record. That's when they started to record such events for the
government. That would be the Standesamt responsible for the place.

Hi Fred:

Three of the four children were born after
1870. I was wondering if there was a record of
migrants on the German side.

If they left out of the port of Hamburg there well might be a record
but Bremen/Bremerhaven has no records from that time period. They
destroyed most for lack of space and the rest was burned during the
bombings of the city.

Hi Fred

Sigh! They left from Bremen. I guess that means I am
out of luck?

Yopu don't have a place where they came from? Just the country? Like
Oldenburg?

Fred

PS the only approach then is to see where the name is most common.

Hi Fred:

They are from Oldenburg/Ostfriesland near Jever and
Aurich. I think they eventually settled near Jever and
Hoosiel. The NARA ship manifest shows they left Bremen and
arrived in Baltimore in October 1883 on board SS Strassburg.

Hello Bill,

in my family there are some Harms in the area of Oldenburg.

    1. Adolf Harms 1 .

Adolf heiratete Sophie Rippen 2 Tochter von Johann Hinrich Rippen und Anna Blts. Sophie wurde ungefhr 1898 geboren.

Sie hatten die folgenden Kinder:

2 M i. Adolf Harms 3 wurde in Ofnudiek geboren.
    3 W ii. Kthe Harms 4 .
    4 W iii. Erna Harms 5 . Erna heiratete Alois 6 .
    5 W iv. Else Harms 7 .
    6 W v. Hertha Harms 8 .
    7 W vi. Selma Harms 9 .
    8 W vii. Hanna Harms 10 .
    9 M viii. Werner Harms 11 starb nach 0012.

May be, something matches. Please tell me more about it.

Greetings from Northern Westfalia

This is what I have from the NARA ship manifest:

Marie Harms 35 f Germany Ills
Herm Harms 2 m Germany Ills
Johann Harms 10 m Germany Ills
Anna Harms 13 f Germany Ills
Emilie Harms 8 f Germany Ills
Hugo Harms 7 m Germany Ills

According to records I have found, the family group should
be:

Harm 38
Marie 51 *
John 15
Anna 13
Hillida Elise Garhardine 9
Wilhelmina Marie 8

* Marie's age is suspect.

As you can see, there is about a 50% match and the the
entries which don't match can be explained by the recorder
not clearly know the gender of the family member, writing
down what he heard for the names, and mistranscribing the
ages. The year of immigration, taken from subsequent
censuses, matches perfectly. The year, taken from obits, do
not match as well. My mother said the family may have come
with another family. So I can't draw any firm connections.
I need more evidence.
