Hello Bryan,
I try it to explain.
Father: Joan Bernd SCHRÖDER
aka BORMENKEN SCHRAER
aka BURMENKE SCHRÖDER
In the area Damme, Holdorf, Steinfeld was in earlier time some Schröder farms and a lot of Schröder families. There you can find also some Menke farms.
Therefore they got sometimes additional names.
Just north of the town Damme, now in Holdorf area, is a historical place it called "Dersaburg", former short form "olle Borg" (Plattdütsch). This was a protection castle from the Middle Ages. Today you can see only a small hill.
The first big farm lay nearby this "Borg". At the taxregister of 1542 called the owner "Gert tor borg", later Borchmann, Borgmann. Since 1883 lives there a Sextro family.
I assume a Menke lived close to this place and later a Schöder. Borg(e)menke was never a real name in this area.
There has been much written about the "Hollandgänger" back then, so I
wonder
if there were any "Norwegengänger". Borge was apparently a center for
lumber
and other industries, so perhaps some of the German migrant workers went
to
Norway for work?
I doun't believe this. The Hollangänger walked to Netherland, never to Norwegen, this is to far.
I hope this help.
Werner
