Hi again,

I'm still having problems with my Kenkel's.

In 1774 Hen. Struving married Elis Kenkel. In 1800 Elis. Kenkel gnt
Sturving
died at age 44. So far in reading the Dinklage records I have found the age

at death to be quite accurate. They had five children. On these baptism
records she is listed as Elis., Maria Elis or Anna Elis so I'm assuming
her
full name was Anna Maria Elis. Kenkel. Using the information on the death
record she should have been born in 1856. There is no record in 1856. A
continued search, using all combinations of her name, found Anna Elis., dau

of Berend Kenkel and Anna Aleid Kenkel born 25 Sep 1752 and Elis , dau of
Tobias Kenkel and Lucia Prullage born 25 Sep 1758. If I ignore her age on
the death records and she was born in 1758 she would only have been 16 when

she married and this seems too young compared to all of the other marriages
I
have. If I use 1752 she would be 22 when she married.

Does anyone have any suggestions for solving this problem? At a meeting
several years ago someone suggested using the godparents to decide if the
information is correct but I'm not sure how this would work.

Thanks

Marcy

Hi Marcy,

I may be able to help you out a little bit. I am researching the Kenkels
also, although I haven't followed up on them in a couple of years. I found
them to be rather frustrating.

I think that the Elisabeth, daughter of Tobias Kenkel and Lucia Prullage,
born 25 Sep 1758 is very probably my ancestor who married Johann Hilgefort on
1 Feb 1781 in Dinklage. My Elisabeth died in Holdorf on 13 Dec 1826 with her
age listed as 68. This would put her as being born in 1758. I am pretty
sure that this is my ancestor, and not your Elisabeth Kenkel. However, since
there were two other Elisabeth Kenkels (a Dorthea Elisabet, b. 10 Mar 1759
and a Catharina Elisabetha, b. 2 Sep 1860) born around the same time as mine
should have been, there is a small chance that one of these could be my
Elisabeth Kenkel instead. I usually like to rule out all other possibilities
for an ancestor, before I say for certain that a person is my ancestor. I
haven't found (or looked for) death records for the other two yet, and
therefore haven't made this birth conclusive in my records yet.

I agree with your other possibility for your Elisabeth, but I think that
there are also a couple of other possibilities. There was an Anna Margaretha
Elisabetha Kenkel born to Johan Herman Kenkel and Lucia Bunnemeyer on 9 Oct
1752, a Maria Margaretha Elisabetha Rebecca Kenkel born to Johan Henrich
Kenkel and Anna Maria Francisca Naderman on 23 Sep 1751, and a Catharina
Elisabet Kenkel born to Jan Henrich Kenkel and Catharina Margaretha
Bunnemeyer on 29 Aug 1754.

I agree that you could try using godparents to try and sort out the right
one, but I'd suggest that you track down the deaths of the other
possibilities first, which might be easier and more certain that sorting out
the godparents. Maybe somebody else on the list has one or more of these
Elisabeth Kenkels in their records, and you can rule them out. Also, I think
there are too many Kenkels in Dinklage with the same names in this time
period to make checking the godparents certain. They also tend to
intermarry. Johann Hilgefort above's mother was an Anna Margaretha Kenkel.
I also have another Anna Catharina Kenkel married to a Heinrich Cohorst in
1843.

I have more Kenkel information if you're interested.

If anyone else is researching the Kenkels, I'd be interested in trading
information. I have extracted a lot of the Kenkel births, deaths and
marriages from the 1700's, but they are all handwritten and they include
other names I was researching simultaneously. I have not organized them into
families.

Hope this helps.
