I am new to the Oldenburg List and have been finding much about the
history of this area from reading the postings from 1997 to the present.
I recently received a research report which confirmed that my family line
is from the Lohne area. I would like to have been a member of this site when
it was first started so I would have been able to purchase the book by
Clemens Broring, but now I will have to ask for your help with learning about
the Meschendorf (Marschendorf) and Bahlen history.
My great grand father, Heinrich KATHMANN and twin sister Margaretha
Wilhelmina, were born 31-03-1850. Lohne Baptismal Register (31-32/1850).
Parents; Theodor KATHMANN and Agnes KENTER, Godparents; Harm Hinrich KENTER,
Marie Catherina BRINKMANN, Margarethe KALVELAGE, and Johann Hinrich BRORING.
Theodor Kathmann was a Hausler at Broring in Meschendorf.
It is possible that Heinrich (Henry John in America) traveled to the USA
with Anton POLKING from Sudlone as both men are found at the same locations
in Iowa, namely Bremen township, Delaware County and Carroll County.
Now to my question, which deals with the KATHMANN and BRORING farms in Bahlen
and Marschendorf.
1. Can anyone provide me with details on the past and present owners of these
two farms?
2. Any history as to how the farms came into the possession of the families?
3. There are two other Kathmann farms in this area, would these be related or
as in other cases of surnames having the same meaning, only variations of,
Kathe/Kathen meaning, man from small hut.
Thank you for your time and happy digging.
PS sorry about not using amulets on the proper letters in place and proper
names.
