[OL]How many Essens are there in Germany?

I am helping a friend at work with her family tree. She said that her
father's family went from Essen Germany to South Dakota in the 1870's. Her
great-grandfather was named Carl MEDINUS and that he was married to a woman
whose last name was USCHKOREIT. His first wife died, and he went back to
Germany and married her sister, Justina USCHKOREIT. They are listed on the
1880 census for Hutchinson Co. SD. Both last names are rather unusual, and
she said she was told that her family came from Essen, which she thought was
in eastern Germany near Lithuania.
I seem to recall Essen from this list. Is there more than one Essen?

Alex,
it is most likely NOT the Essen/Oldenburg and most likely the big
city of Essen/Ruhr. Many people from the eastern territories went to
the industrial regions of the Ruhr to look for work in the mines and in
the steel industry. You'll find people from East Prussia, Poland and
Lithuania there during this time. This may have gotten confused
among the descendants.
