Thank you for the response. I have been reading up on the history of the area and can see that it will not be easy. The Dutch West Indies Company would hire anyone with appropriate skills or desire, so of course there were many nationalities in New Amsterdam. Something the other querent did not consider.
The Hendrick I am looking for could write as well, I will look for his signature. Maybe getting the spelling variant right would help. I am certain he was from the area, but also question whether he was actually Swede or Dane rather than German, since the ruler of the area at the time was also King of Denmark and Sweden.
In any case, I will follow your advice and keep digging.
