I have on my mother's side a great great grandfather with the name of Johann Gerhard Ernst Hagemann. Sometimes the word van or von is used as a part of the surname. My references to him relate through his daughter (my great grand mother) Karoline Sophie Friederike born on the 19 Jan 1845 where some of that information is recorded. He was from the town of Oldenburg and her information lists is occupations as a "Propriet�r", which I don't know what that means and also as a writer (Shrieber--spelling?). Some of my inquiries suggested that he might have written for other people because the level of literacy was quite different back during the mid-1850's. Would anybody have information as about or where to look for information about this individual and what he might have done for his living. George Poch Rochester, Minn.

Where is this shown? Many von/van names were changed
both in Germany and in the US to simply carry the name
itself. This is especially true when there no nobility status
was attached to the name, ie it was just a name.

Always be careful when you see the name of the capital city
in a Duchy or Kingdom as the source of emigration. The
question must always be was it the city or the country they
came from? Generally speaking few city dwellers emigrated.
Most of the folks who left had a problem on the farm. They
had no land, no real future.

This could be tricky. Presuming that he was born into his
father's status around 1815/20 this could well be just his
social status otherwise known as Leibeigen, similar to serf.
From an ecyclopedia: Proprietär (v. lat.: proprius eigen)
bedeutet zugehörig, eigen. He could well have become a
writer (Schreiber) or secretary/clerk for someone.
It's always tricky to try to establish facts from just a few
words someone else wrote down.

You don't tell us much only that your gr grandmother was
born in 1845 and somewhere along the line wrote two words
about her father. You'll have to be a bit more forthcoming
with your information. Maybe then someone can help.
