Bruggeman or Brueggmann
Bruggeman is a ordinary Dutch family name. It's derived probably from the
occupation or place because 'Brug' means 'Bridge' in Dutch.
In a dutch book (Nederlandsche Geslachtsnamen by Johan Winkler) the
following explanation:
There are a lot of names ending on "man", mostly have a geographic
background. Sometimes the end on "mans" which is a short of ....man's son.
The name says: A man that lived nearby a bridge (Bruggeman),
sluice(Sluisman), dike(Dijkman), woud(Boschman), hill (Heuvelman) or
mountain(Bergman)was sometimes named after the place where he lived. More
examples: Brugman, Bruggeman, Brugmans en Bruggemans, Daalman, Dijkman en
Dijkmans, Duinman, Geestman en Gastmans. Also the German spelling Brggemann
or Bruegg(e)mann can be explained is this way.
In German the translation for Bridge is Brcke not Brgge. I repost this
mail in the Oldenburger list. I hope they can answer the question of the
native of Brgge or Bruegg.
There are a lott of genealogic websites:
