[OL]Evangelical/Reformed/Lutheran-19th centgury meaning of terms

I am researching the history of my church-Lutheran-which is 150 years old
this year. We have a copy of a letter from the parents of one of the earliest
settlers here (in Texas) who was concerned that the pastor of the church was
"evangelic." Does anyone know to what this term would have referred in
1850? Today, of course, Evangelical tends to suggest a Reformed church in the
tradition of Calvin....and Lutheran tends to refer to a more liturgical,
confessional church in the tradition of Luther.

I believe that, at the time, there was the unified church-a forced
combination
of the two traditions....so, I am unsure what the term would have meant at
the time. Might anyone be able to assist....or to suggest someone who might
be
able to help?
