Hi Janet:
There are a couple of things you may have to consider:
1. While I am no expert with German, whenever I see an "e" after an
"o" I always think of the use of the unlaut. lker. Others on this
List can correct me on the use of the umlaut.
2. You have not provided very much information.
You mention Hanover, so I assume that you have some confirmation
for that name. However, during the dates you list, Hannover could be
the Kingdom of Hannover or the city of Hannover. That gives you a
large search area with only birth dates to narrow your search.
However, I have never seen the name before, so that may narrow your
search some.
Do you have any immigration information? Wedding records? Were Ernst
and Elise children of Wilhlem and Adele? If so were they born in the
U.S.?
In: [1]http://www.castlegarden.org You will find Adele (48), Elise
(14), Ernst (19) and Wilhelm (44) listed as arriving on the General
Werder on 26 July 1882. Both Adele and Elise are listed as farmers, and
Ernst and Wilhelm are listed as bakers. They left from Bremen, but no
place of former residence was given.
There is a website that lists emmigration from Germany:
[2]http://aidaonline If you can work your way through it or if
someone on the List can help you, you might obtain some usefull
information. The dates you will be looking for are prior to July
1882.
Have fun,
Gale
Thanks for your reply. Ernst and Elise are the children of Wilhelm and Adele, and they were born in Hannover. I don't know if they were born in the city of Hannover or the Kingdom of Hannover. Ernst's daughter told me that they were from Hannover, and I do know that there are many Oelkers in Hannover.
Sometime ago I was in contact with a Gustav Oelker I had found at a genealogy message board. His family was from Petze, Rahden, Herford, Emsbueren, Osnabrueck, and Lingen. I ordered the films from a Family History Center and searched the records. I found his line of Oelkers, but none of mine.
I did get my family's immigration record by writing the National Archives (before it went online). I do have Ernst's application for citizenship; it only says that he was from Germany. Ernst became a citizen in Chicago. Chicago records give very little information. I haven't found his father's application for citizenship.
Look for the children's marriage records. Also, the grandchildren's
baptismal records. If the family attended a German speaking church you will
probably find more in the way of details than just "Hannover."
Hi Janet:
Try
[1]http://aidaonline.niedersachsen.de/
if you can get someone from this List to help you.
There are emigration records (leaving Germany) available and they are
quite comprehensive.
