Hallo,
My name is Mark Nuss. I am looking for ino on my
ancestors Carl and Frantz Nuss. Family lore is that
they were in the millitary. I do not have their dates
but it was before 1847 and I suppose around the city
of Schomigen A little south of the city of Hannover.
Carl's son Wilhem Henrich August Nuss came to America
in 1866. any help would be appreciated.
Danke,
Mark
Hello Mark,
In the emigration archives of Hannover there is one listing for
Nuss:
Nuss, Heinrich Wilhelm August
The names are the same although in a different order. It is the only
Nuss listing for Hannover. That leads to the town of Uslar. Of course,
there are a great many emigrants that are not in the archives.
I cannot find a town by the name of Schomigen, but I think it is
maybe Schoningen which is very near to Uslar.
You can order the emigration record for the Nuss mentioned above or
more directly, look at the LDS records for Uslar. I would guess that the
people in Schoningen went to church in Uslar. There are 4 microfilms that
are listed for Uslar. The most relevant one would be the church record
which would cover the time period you mention:
Kirchenbuchduplikat, 1779-1875 Evangelische Kirche Uslar (StKr. Uslar)
I hope you are near a LDS center and can order the microfilm and read it
there.
I wish you luck!
Barbara
Barbara, you refer to the emigration archives for Hannover. My ggrandfather emigrated to New Orleans and had listed his birthplace as Hildeshein in Hanover. He was borm about 1825 and arrived in New Orleans in 1860 from Hamburg. Can you tell me how I can access the Hannover imigration records? Thanks,
Max
Hello Max,
I remember that you are looking for Julius Burgdorf from Hildesheim.
Last January, I had sent you all the Burgdorf listings in the emigration
archives. There is only one Julius Burgdorf listed and it is in the
Wolfenbüttel archives from the area of Salder. The year given is 1849 and I
concluded that was not your Julius. Other Burgdorfs traveling at the same
time were Christine, Conrad, Wilhelmine and Sophie.
Recently, you asked about the name Burchtorff as a variation of
Burgdorf. I checked the 3 emigration archives and there was only one listed
in the Wolfenbüttel archives. The name was Johann Friedrich Burchtorff and
he was from the area of Gandersheim.
Trying to read the archives in German is difficult and so I have done
that for you and this is all I can find. There were many people who
emigrated from Hannover that are not listed in the emigration archives. You
say Julius traveled from Hamburg, perhaps he is listed in the Hamburg
archives. I found this page:
http://linktoyourroots.hamburg.de/
They charge a fee and from I read there, the online lists only include 1890
-1905. You can see on that page, that they will do a direct search for you,
but there is a charge for that. I have no idea if that would help you or
not.
There are LDS records from Hildesheim, but I don't know if you have
access to a LDS center. There are several of them and that would take a lot
of time.
You also could try this page and see if you can find your ancestor.
There are many Burgdorfs listed - I don't see any that would be what you are
looking for:

I am so sorry I can't help you find your Julius Burgdorf. I do remember
your name and request and will keep watching for something that may be
helpful to you.
