Nordholt Family Origins

Dear List,

What I find interesting here is that Mark is looking for Nordholt, and there is a place name Nordhorn for want of a couple letters the spelling is the same.

I'm curious what Nordholt and Nordhorn mean in the German Language. I wonder if Nordholt signifies a location or an occupation type name? And I wonder if/how the spelling is affected by a Dutch accent or meaning verses German?

Forgive if silly Q.

Hi Cactus Flower,

"Nordholt" is combined out of the direction "Nord-"= North and "-holt", what is
Lower German for the High German "-holz", what has the sense of wood. A transla-
tion would that why would be correct with Northwood. It is anyway another sense
as in the ending "-horn", what is the same in English: horn. Don't be an expert
for the Nordhorn-history, but would think the name comes from a former shape of
the territory or is even out of that times, when it was first settled or
missionars took it as a farout peak of their ruled region under religious rule.
But that are speculations. One surely has to deny the sense of an occupation in
both words. Last mail for today and best wishes for tonight Hans Peter Albers
