New Year's Traditons

Hi All,

Happy New Year!

As midnight approaches, I was wondering about some of the
customs/superstitions that we follow. There are two that I observe because
my German Grandmother did, and I wonder if anyone knows if they are German
traditions and/or the meaning of them. They are eating herring right after
midnight, and the other is putting pennies on all the windowsills on New
Year's Eve. I assume both are for good luck, and the herring reminds me of
the Southern custom of eating black-eyed peas on New Year's Day.
