Hello, everyone!
I am a new member to the list. Unfortunately, I am not multilingual; I
speak only English. I admit to being a bit intimidated to join a
multilingual list, but here I am. I am also new to researching in
Poland.
My grandparents were Polish immigrants and I have only recently
determined the village where they were living when they married and had
their three children – Sokoligóra. The source of the information is
records from St. Katarzyna in Golub-Dobrzyń. There were no other
entries for my family in those records, only the marriage and three
births. They were Roman Catholic. I will list below what I know about
them.
Ignacy ŻABIŃSKI, born about December 1847 in Russia
Parents: Andrzej ŻABIŃSKI (born in Russia) and Anna PRUSIECKA (born in
Germany)
Married: 27 January 1873
Marianna POĆWIARDOWSKA, born about November 1849 in Germany
Parents: Ignacy POĆWIARDOWSKI (born in Germany) and May (or Mary?)
HOFFMANN (born in Germany)
Ignacy and Marianna’s children were Marianna (born 1874), Marta (born
1876), and Jan (born 1879).
I know that Poćwiardowski is a surname derived from the village of
Poćwiardowo, which is very near Sokoligóra. Prusiecki, at least
according to one website, is derived from Prus, and is part of Group III
of Prussian noble surnames. I am told that Żabiński is of Kashubian
origin.
I have written to św. Marii Magdaleny in Ostrowite, the parish that
serves Poćwiardowo, and asked the priest to check his records for the
birth of Marianna POĆWIARDOWSKA.
I would appreciate any assistance you can offer to help locate the home
villages for my great grandparents and to identify their parents and
siblings. Thanks! I am looking forward to learning more about my
Prussian roots.
