Subject: [HN] New to List: Kammann
I am a new subscriber to this list, but I hope that if I read enough
messages my three years of high school German will come back. It is
already
improving my English skills and history knowledge.
My Kammann ancestors came from the area around Hilter, near Osnabruck, in
the 1840s. (Note the spelling, with the L before the T; a friend just
asked me
why they named the place after that guy.) They settled first in
Cincinnati, then in Dubois county, Indiana (or possibly just across the
line in Warrick
county). Relatives lived in Jackson and Ripley counties, Indiana, and
there
was apparently secondary migration to those places and elsewhere in
Indiana.
Alternate spellings include Kampmann and Kamman.
I would like to hear from others who are researching this family, or
There are still some Kammann addresses in Rödinghausen, not in Hilter.
Rödinghausen is located about 20 miles easterly from Osnabrück and Hilter about 10 miles south from Osnabrück.
I search for a friend the origin of a Niehaus family which emigrated also to Dubois county, Indiana.
Now I saw also some Niehaus addresses in Rödinghausen. Could it be, that there is a conection between the Kammann and Niehaus families?
I realize this is a long shot, but I wondered if anyone was familiar with the MENKE family from near Osnabrück? For many years I've been stuck with a mystery.
Mr. Menke (given name unknown) and his wife Mary (surname unknown) came to the United States around 1848 along with their children (I know of five, see below). Mr. Menke either died on the voyage or very shortly after they arrived (it's possible he died in Germany). Mary (b. abt 1813) and some of the children are found in Jackson County, IN in the 1850 Census. Mr. Menke and Mary's known children are as follows:
1. Christian Menke, born Jan 1837 in or near Osnabrück
2. Elisabeth Menke, born 13 Oct 1841 in or near Osnabrück
3. Lizetta Menke, born 1 Nov 1842 in or near Osnabrück
4. Louis Menke, born abt 1845 in or near Osnabrück
5. Mary Menke, born abt 1848 in or near Osnabrück (or possibly Indiana)
By 1860 the children were scattered with Christian and Louis still in Jackson County, IN (though not together), Elisabeth married and living in Indianapolis, and no sign of Mary or her mother. Although I've not found Lizetta in 1860 she married in Indianapolis in 1862. Our family story states that both parents died shortly after they arrived in the U.S. so I assume Mary (the mother) died in the early 1850s. In 1861 Christian moved to Dubois County, IN where he lived the rest of his life. Louis supposedly joined the Union Army during the American Civil War and died while in service, story says he is buried somewhere in Virginia. A search of military records hasn't turned him up as of yet, but the spelling of the last name varies and it's possible he went by a different first name (I find this often in my German ancestors, they go by what we would consider both their first and middle names at different times). After the deaths of their parents it is said that Elizabeth was raised by a Lutheran Minister and that Lizetta and Louis were raised by their Aunt Lizetta Rust. Lizetta Rust is most likely the sister of their mother Mary. Lizetta Rust (c1810-1894) was married to Frederick Rust (c1811-c1875) and they were living in Jackson County, IN in 1850 and 1860. The moved to Dubois County, IN by 1870 and Lizetta Rust (widow) was living in the household of her niece Lizetta (who had married Karl Otto in 1862) in 1880.
Our family story states the family came from Osnabrück or the surrounding countryside. The family was of the Lutheran faith in the United States.
In the Castle Garden passenger lists there is a Joseph Menke (age 30)
and a Maria Menke (32) who came to the USA - arrival Jane 5 1846. Both
listed as Farmer. The last residence was Boesel (Bösel) The children are
not listed on that ship, but they could have come later. The 1846 date and
age of 32 fits her appoximate birth as 1814. Perhaps she sent for the
children later. I'll keep hunting.
If you are writing about MENKE it would be a good idea
to put the name Menke in your subject line so that people
who are interested in that surname would be alerted to
your message.
Many busy people who are not interested
in the name KAMMAN would just delete a message like
yours without reading it, I'm afraid. They would think it was
just a continuation of the conversation on Kamman. :-))
Hopefully, this message will now catch all who might be
interested in all the good MENKE information below!
