New member - Derner family

I am a new member to this service.
Family lore says that Joseph Derner BD Jan 8, 1814 was born in Oldenburg,
He migrated to the U.S. in 1853 aboard the Sir Robert Peel. He and his soon
to be wife, Theresia Merkt (born in Spaichingen, Germany) stayed in New York
for 2-3 yrs then moved to Illinois. They lived there from 1855-1875 and then
moved to Carroll Co., Iowa. They are buried in Breda, Iowa.
One uncle of mine remembers hearing that Joseph came to the U.S. so he did
not have to serve under the Kaiser.
I am his gg granddaughter and have been unable to find his birthplace. He
was Roman Catholic and spoke High German. He was an excellent carpenter and
also did some farming.
Any and all help would be appreciated.

My great grandmother and her four sons and one daughter came to the U S
through Ellis Island so her sons did not have to fight for the Kaiser. I
know this for a fact as my father heard her say that.

My first suggestion would be to check all the church records in the
place(s) he lived.
