I'm still in the basic stages of learning of my family roots and am
hoping to find more information on the NEMITZ family line. I only know
some "basics" so far: I am in the direct line of Gottlib Ferdinand
Nemitz (my great, great grandfather) who came to America (Bad Axe,
Michigan) in the 1860s from West Prussia (Villiage of Sommin, county seat
of Butow, Province of Pomerania) after being released from the service of
the Royal Government . From him came Albert Wilhelm Ferdinand Nemitz (my
great grandfather), and then Albert W. Nemitz (my grandfather), and then
my father Albert D. Nemitz, then me (Mark Albert Nemitz) and I now have a
son named Bradley Albert Nemitz.
I don't know much but have been reading bits and pieces recently. I
have so many questions and would love to find out more about my family's
roots -- especially anything relating to family history in Prussia. I am
also curious as to how my family may have come to America (sail/steam
boat?) and where their point(s) of entry may have been?
Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.
Mark,
Have you gone to a large library where they might have the series "Germans
to America?" This series is indexed and by time period. So go to the books
from the 1860s and look up NEMITZ and try to find your family names. If you
find them then you will know the exact date they came over and the name of
the ship, etc. Then there is a book which will describe the type of ship
they came over on, once you know the name of the ship.
There are quite a few people in my area (Jackson Co., WI) with the surname
of NEMITZ.
Good luck with your hunt.

Pomerania ist not West Prussia, so you would better be served in
the Pommern-Pomerania list.
Hi Mark,
I couldn't resist responding. My brother-in-law is a Nemitz. His family was from Wisconsin, but I'm unclear as to where they came from before that. Where is your Nemitz family from?
