My grandfather (Alfred Nehls) was a shipbuilder and his son (my father), Wilhelm Karl Johannes Nehls, was born in Kiel-Gaarden 16.06.1902 as the 11th and last child of Alfred Karl Friedrich and Johanna Catherina Dorothea Brünning Nehls. I have learned that Kiel-Gaarden was the Imperial Shipyard and Germany's largest shipyard at that time and that they made battleships in 1912.
Is it possible that at this time around the start of the 20th century, families actually lived at or near the shipyard if they worked there? Do you know where I could find more information about this area of Kiel (the eastern section) at the turn of the century?
