Dear Barbie,
You asked if Jrgen could have been substituted for Jacob. I'm very curious about this because of a problem I'm having with my own research. I'm looking for the death record of Jacob von Dreel in Neuenkirchen bie Vrden. I don't find a record of Jacob, but yesterday I found a record of Jrgen van Dreel in 1708 at the age of 98, which would be just about the correct age of my Jacob.
So my question, are the names Jacob and Jrgen commonly interchangeable?
Thank you.

I have been following this interesting conversation about names. Has anyone every heard of Johann being called Jurgen? I have a ggg grandfather who always appears as Johann Christian Degener. I have not been able to locate a death for him in the church records in his German village of Rodewald in Hannover. He was supposed to have been born ca. 1760 and died ca. 1840. They do have a record of a Jurgen Degener who died in 1840 at the age of 80. Any thoughts?
Thanks
Don

Johann and Jrgen are totally different names. "Jrgen" comes from "Grgen" and thats the northgerman form of "Georg".

Perhaps your Johann Christian had a third name of which you don`t know ? Look for his birthday.
Greetings Susanne
Hallo Susanne
Thanks for the reply. The baptism records for the time frame of his birth are missing. That is why I have not been able to confirm his actual birth year. He does appear in numerous church records and always just as Johann Christian.
