Dear List Members:
A friend of mine is starting genealogy research. His family name is Yoches
and his ancestors came from the Prussia/Lithuania area. He has no other
specific information yet. Searches for the name Yoches come up empty. He has
also seen a family spelling of Yochis and Jochis or Joches. Does anyone know
more about this name?
Sincerely,
Roberta Wilson

Yoches might be a prussianized spellling of Jacques. Check French-Heugenot
refugees who were
welcomed into Prussia to populate sparsely populated areas.

I have never seen a name in East or West Prussia starting with Y-
The German telephone directory has 271 JOCKISCHs. The genealogy Duden
explains this name as patronimic
from Jacob to which the slavonic suffix is /is with hacek/ is added.
