Then in America changes her name to Katharina.
Is there any significance there?

I think none significance.
Marie Getrud sounds very German.
If the person comes from a family where more then one person is named Marie or Getrud or both, it's obvious that some family members will be (nick)named otherwise.

I think it was quite common for people to change their names when they
immigrated to America. One of my relatives was Gerhard Diedrich. He
became "George D," and his family called him "Dick."
