Naber

Hi,

I am looking for information about John Henry Naber (my great-great-grandfather) who married Mary Adelheida Tauke on May 23, 1855 in New Vienna, Iowa. I would like to find out where he was born and the names of his parents. This information is difficult to find since he is sometimes referred to as John Henry and other times as Henry. His last name can be spelled Naber, Nabers, or Nabor. His birthdate has been listed as 1818 or 1824, and I don't know which part of Hanover he came from. He is listed in the 1880 United States census as Henry Naber born 1824 in Hannover and currently residing in Bremen Township, Delaware County, Iowa. His wife is listed as Mary A Naber born 1839 in Ohio. I know his wife's birthdate in the census is incorrect: She was born October 5, 1836 in Ohio, and she later moved to Iowa with her parents. John Henry's tombstone shows a birthdate of 1818.

The 1869 Plat Map of Delaware County, Iowa shows J.H. Naber, H. Naber, G. Naber, and R.H. Naber all living near the Taukes in Bremen Township. I don't know when the Nabers moved to Iowa.

Does anyone else on this list have Naber ancestors who moved from Hanover to Iowa? I would appreciate any help.

Thanks,

Janet Erdman

Hi Janet,
First of all, I'd like to ask whether your Naber was Catholic. I also
have great-grandparents who lived for a time in New Vienna, Iowa. A number
of people who came to New Vienna came from northwestern Germany, often
called Emsland (near the Ems river and also the border of the Netherlands).
If you check this site:
www.emslanders.com you will find a Anna Helena Naber from Bawinkle
which is between Lingen and Haselünne. It seems to me she could be a
sibling of your John Henry. Contact the person who contributed that data.
Many of the emigrants in New Vienna came through New Orleans to
Cincinnati and there are often records in Hamilton County (Cincinnati) that
can be helpful.
Furthermore, there is a book which lists many of the emigrants from the
Lingen area and it is partially indexed here:
     http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilclint2/tenfelde/dest.htm
There is a Naber listed in that book that has some connection to Louisiana.
That would not be too unusual insofar as many of those people came by way of
New Orleans and he could have stayed there for a time before going to Iowa.
That book is sometimes available in public libraries--I do not have any
access to it, but maybe someone on the list does and could look the name
up.
HOWEVER, there are many Naber (and other spellings) listed on the
Mormon website and I do not want to mislead you and think this Emsland
connection is of any value to you. If you know he was Catholic, it becomes
more likely.
Are you familiar with the New Vienna website?
    http://www.rootsweb.com/~iadubuqu/NewVienna/newvienna.html
There are Naber and Tauke families listed as still living there. That could
be outdated. There are many Tauke and Naber people living in Dyersville in
the questdex.com site. Some times making a phone call pays off!
Let me know what you can and I may be able to find more info to help
you.

Sorry I have a typo there--it should be Bawinkel.

If you check this site:

Hi Barbara,

Yes, my Naber was Catholic. All of my Dad's ancestors (Erdman, Hellman,
Tauke, Eike, Naber) lived in or near New Vienna at some point. I know that
some of them settled in Missouri or Ohio before moving to Iowa. My cousin
has a list of Nabers who settled in Hamilton County, Ohio. She found the
list on the Ohio GenWeb site. The list was of emigrants from Alstaette,
Westphalia, now part of Ahaus located 60 miles from Lingen. None of the
birthdates match up with my ancestor though. There were several Gerhard
Heinrich's listed. That must have been a common name!

The resource book for the Anna Helena Naber you mentioned had several Naber
entries listed in the index. The book is a list of emigrants from Lingen,
so Lingen seems like the most likely point of origin right now. Thanks for
the information--It seems very likely that she's related to my ancestor.

Yes, I've seen the New Vienna website. It's very informative and helped me
with many of the other branches of my family. I live in Illinois, so I'll
try to drive out to New Vienna later this summer.

What was the name of your New Vienna ancestor?

Thanks for your help,

Janet

Hello again,
My people were Lammers/Gugelmeyer and they later moved to Nebraska.
They were from Sustrum(parish Steinbild) and Kathen (parish Lathen).
However, other towns also come into the picture as I have traced back. I
have contacted someone who has many relatives from New Vienna and
Dyersville (which is near there). He has a Frank Naber in his family and I
have emailed him to see if there is a connection and whether he has traced
the Naber line. He is actually a distant relative of mine who ties into my
Lammers line. When I hear from him, I will let you know.
I have gone to Germany (Osnabrück diocese), specifically to do research
on that line of my ancestry. The records of the Catholics from that part of
Germany have never been filmed by the Mormons--unfortunately! I did not
have enough time to finish my research there--so I still have many loose
ends. It is very difficult to get to any records unless you hire someone-or
go there yourself.
I have some other ideas, but I will wait until I hear from the man I
mentioned above. If he has what will tie his Nabers to yours, you'll be in
luck. Also, are you near an LDS center? They have filmed the New Vienna
records and you can order them. But you won't be able to find an exact
birthplace in Germany though.
     I'll be in touch--
Barbara
