My genealogy - Woida

Hi Bernadine,
If he was born in Preußen in 1848, he was not born in the Kingdom of
Hannover. However, many records in America, such as Censuses and probably
passenger lists, reflect the contemporary name of countries, regardless of the
name at the time of the event being recorded (e.g. in 1873, since the former
Kingdom of Hannover was then part of Prussia, many records would show, birth,
marriage etc. that occured in the Kingdom of Hannover as being in Prussia.
Likewise, after 1871 many records would have shown the same birth or marriage
as having taken place in the German Empire or Germany).
Unfortunately, even if he was born in the Kingdom of Hannover, that doesn't
help very much in being able to find his birth record. There were a very
large number of cities, towns and villages in the Kingdom of Hannover. Your
best hope is that someone on the List will recognize the name and provide you
with some clue about what parish he may have came from.
If you can locate his Naturalization Papers in the US, that will probably
show his birth place. His death certificate may also show that information
(depending on who provided the information for the certificate and whether they
actually knew or not).
Again, good luck on your search.
    Don

This is not a reply but a question. What years did the Kingdom of Hanover exist and roughly what were the boundaries?

Hi Max,
The Kingdom of Hannover was established by the "Final Act of (the Congress
of) Vienna" which was signed by the four major powers in the Coalition War
against Napoleon plus the representative of the French Monarchy on 9 June,
1815. (The "Big Four" Powers were the United Kingdom, Preußen, Austria and
Russia). I am not sure when the Act actually went into effect, but I think it
was almost immediately.
On 14 June, 1866, Preußen and Austria went to war in what was called "The
Seven Weeks War". The next day, 15 June, 1866, the Prussian Army invaded The
Kingdom of Hannover. The Hannoverian Army fought a delaying action at the
Battle of Langensalza to give their King, George V, and his family time to take
refuge in Austria. The Hannoverians won the battle, but the next day their
commander surendered to the Prussians who had surrounded them with about 40,000
men. The Seven Weeks War officially ended at The Treaty of Prague on 23
August, 1866. The Treaty disolved the German Confederation which allowed
Preußen to annex the bulk of the northern German states, including The Kingdom
of Hannover which then became a province of Prussia.
The boundaries of the Kingdom of Hannover were from the Harz Mountains on the
south to the North Sea & the Schleswig-Holstein border, and from the Netherlands
on the west to Prussian territory on the east. It was rather large for a 19th
century German state (either fourth or fifth largest after Austria, Preußen and
Bavaria & ?). It was formed from the Electorate of Hannover whose ruler, a
grandson of James I of England, had also become King George I of England when
Queen Anne died without an heir in 1714. His descendants ruled England until
1837 when Victoria became Queen. The law in Hannover did not permit a woman
to be ruler of the country.
And that's all I have to say about that  (at least for now).

If you will use Google.com and search on "Kingdom of Hannover"
(within the quotation marks, just as I've typed it)
you will find more and better information than anyone here can
type out for you in an hour or more of trying!

Use your Internet as a library! It is just like the library stacks at
a great university! (Well, almost!)

Dear Bernadine,

If this Freidrich is your ancestor..Try to obtain marriage certificate or perhaps some type of application for marriage license.. Perhaps will mention name or address of the Milwaulkee church this couple married. Perhaps then you could investigate church records and possibly discover something on the Woida origins.
Perhaps some of the other Woida's of the Milwaulkee area are related to Freidrich.

I suspect Woida an eastern surname.

Some of the Wisconsin Woida's list Poland as birthplace. --------------Excerpted from the History of St. Michael the Archangel Church in Radom, Illinois....
There was the (Franco-Prussian) War of 1870-1871.

After this war, when Bismarck really started prosecutions of Polish, it was a beginning, as I mentioned, of the huge inflow of Polish immigrants to the United States, especially to the cities of: Buffalo, Toledo, Detroit, Chicago and Milwaukee.

They were mostly veterans of the French-German war, some of them even from the Danish war and Austrian war.

The Fred & Agatha Woida couple of the 1880 Census are listed here amongst many other Woida's.

Dear Bernadine,

I was married in the catholic church. I had to provide a copy of my baptismal certificate. My daughter is getting married in June. The church has asked for her baptismal certificate. I assume they will document where she was baptised in the sacramental record.

I don't know if the catholic church requested this data in olden times... but perhaps.
