My gtx2 grandfather Louis ROTHENBERG was
born in Henstedt,Hannover about 1833. ...
Would the fact that he was probably jewish make any difference?
Marion
Hello Marion,
if Louis ROTHENBERG was born in Henstedt near Syke and if Henstedt belongs to the parish of Syke which I believe (but am not sure), then I must tell you that there is no entry in the church records of Syke around 1833 for this name, nor does this name exist in the registry. But this was to be exspected if he was of jewish religion, because this was not a general record of all that were born in that place but only of those who were baptized.
Greetings
Edlef
there is an essay about Jews in Syke from the beginnings to 1933/45:
Hermann Greve, Vergessen, verdrngt, verneint ... Stationen jdischen Lebens
in Syke, Brinkum, Leeste, Kirchweyhe, in: Harald Focke, Hermann Greve,
Hilmar Kurth, Als die Synagogen brannten, Sulingen 1988 S. 27-96
Perhaps there will be further informations.

Hello Edlef
Thank you so much for your reply and for looking through the Church records.
Would you please be kind
again and tell me if there are any jewish records?
I'm sorry for asking you this but I don't know where else to go.
I have found the book in a library in Hanover (Landesbibliothek Hannover),
another copy is in the library of the parliament of Lower Saxony in Hanover.
Shall I try to get one of these books and send you a photocopy?
