Hi Hans Peter,
I'm over at the Oregon coast with my son, and we're looking at the large map of
Ostfriesland. My son Daryl has a copy of the Engerhafe Orstippenbuch. It lists
some names that correspond with those of Gretja Conrad's ancestors. I will
give more detail of this later. And these names are from the area north and west
of Aurich: Moorhusen, Marienhafe, Osteel. Engerhafe, Riepe. So rather than
looking right now at Schortens, I suggest we look at the western part of
Sudbrookmerland.
This means that I am interested in the names from the Moorhusen Post Mu"nkeboe.
Moench (Mo"nch), Conrad.
Where am I likely to find church records of this area? Barbara, do I have to search
for each community in this area, or is there an inventory list of what the Family
History Centers have?
Thanks,
Larry
Hi Larry,
You can go online to the Family History Catalog by going to the
www.familysearch.org and click on Search for Ancestors, then go to the
Family History Catalog on the right. Do a search there for Place. If there
is not a listing for a town you want, you need to consult a map and see the
nearby town which may hold the records--or else, the LDS have not been able
to film the records from there. There are church records for Marienhafe
1828-1874, for Engerhafe 1804-1874, Riepe 1804-1874, and I don't see any for
Munkeboe or Moorhusen per se. There are civil records available as well.
Then when you go to the LDS center, you can order the microfilm by number.
They will help you find what you need.
Good luck,
Barbara Stewart

Hello Larry Monk,
that Moorhusen Post Mnkeboe is as written part of Sdbrookmerland, where no
MNCK and CONRAD are given. You will find there about 20 CONRADS with the additi-
onal "S", which should be another line if not yet documented in Gretja's line,
that there happened changes to the writing with "S". If you look in the telefon-
directory you have to look under Sdbrookmeerland to find the actual bearer
CONRADS. I drew you out of the given 74 MNCK in 1995 those places which lie in
Ostfriesland and have some MNCK then with telefon. These places are:
"Aurich" (9 MNCK), "Esens" (1 MNCK), "Friedeburg" (4 MNCK), "Groefehn" (8
MNCK, 3 MNK), "Ihlow" (3 MNCK), "Zetel (4 MNCK)"

Principaly one has to go to each parish-book, if you look for the more details of
the names under the told places above, you may go to or give in "Kirchen" and you
get the actual parishes and see if the church is directly at the place or another
given. Not always, but in most cases the belonging to the there given church has
been for several hundred years the same. With that place you can look in the
library of ... last saints.., what is given by them, to see at the centers over
there. Barbara Stewart will be of better knowledge about this way as I am and
may perhaps say more. Greetings Hans Peter Albers
Dear Larry Monk,
here is a another finding about your name in the variation MNCK. This name
appears in another region, the Vierlande near Bergedorf, what is in the east of
Hamburg, just at the river Elbe and being an assembling of several villages in
the knee of the river. Harald RICHERT reports in his article: "Alte Hausmarken in
Vierlande" in. Zeitschrift fr Niederdeutsche Familienkunde, 1994, S.99 -120 a
"Mnckhof" and says that the name of this MNCK was developed out of MONIK, who
had been there even earlier. He gives for Kirchwerder, one of the villages:
...
67.MNCK, Hennich/Henneke 1667 Ohe ( what is again a special part inside
Kirchwerder; HPA)
68.MONIK, Harmen und Frau + 1593
...
"Hausmarken" were special signs of sometimes great similarity with runes. They
were put on every tool and every other things belonging to the farmplace and in
form and largeness comparible with cattle branding signs. The nr. 67. looks a bit
like Neptunes trident earth directed. The other one, nr.68, you would not like as
I don't too, because it has the form of a swastika with inside winkled wings.
Just an accident, because most signs are of a lot differentiated style.
As the seaway was given from Ostfriesland to this place at the river, I thought
you might sometime profit from this hint, going deeper in the history of your
anchestor MNCK.
Best wishes Hans Peter Albers
